I am appalled at the passivity these new movies encourage in young people. They
are no longer required to exercise even their imaginations. My students will watch
anything on a TV screen (and believe it as well!!) but are stumped and "bored" by
words that don't have pictures.

Every time we create pictures *for* a child, he has less interest and ability in
creating his own pictures. Is there a person in the world who doesn't know that
Harry Potter looks like Daniel Radcliffe? Lucy? Pippin? Even Ramona!

Good luck to us all, I say.

Subject: Re: New Movies...Old Favorites

I came away from the WTWTA preview with a horrible image in my head--Maurice
Sendak's classic book in stores with a new cover: Some still photo from the
movie and a banner proclaiming: "Now a major motion picture!"

It seems as though all of these movies have high production values, but
something sad happens when a picture book becomes a movie. When Shrek came
out, I read the original William Steig book to my students, and they just
sat there and went, "That's it?" The quiet heart of the book/story
experience is cut out of it.
