Hi Karen -
I'm in a K-5 school and we use Apple computers and laptops, along with all the
user-friendly software. Some of the projects I do with my 5th graders each year
are:
*keynote (slideshows) or imovies with photos, podcast, music, works cited. Time
permitting, special effects.
*ichat (aim) for project collaboration purposes,
*iweb (create a webpage). For this project the students "become" a historical
person they've researched (famous colonists or explorers) and create a myspace
webpage as if they are them. It includes text, links, photos, music, works cited
with a lot of critical thinking! Our DARE officer comes in as we begin this
project to give an Internet Safety talk as well. Last year I conducted a written
survey and learned that 1/2 of our school's fifth graders have or have had a
facebook or myspace account.
The one lesson I have (finally) learned is that you require them to complete the
text part before harvesting photos and music. The multi-media aspect of these
projects keep them engaged and fits the way today's students live and learn.
