I agree with Barbara on this one! I have the syllabi of at least 12 different courses within the field of education (elementary through high school) and EACH one requires a significant amount of research involved, as well as documentation. These are ONLY the courses / professors / classes that I have personally worked with during the past year---and I'm continuing to collaborate with others! Our professors require that the undergraduate students use the APA style manual (rather than MLA) and our copies are almost always checked-out. While there MAY be some fields of study that have fewer research assignments (such as physical education which still requires research but perhaps not a written paper with citations), overall, most of our freshman attend a refresher course in research (taught by our Library faculty) in how to do research because they either do not have the skills necessary for basic assignments required in higher education or they have not been taught in high school. DO NOT take the words of those who are disconnected from the realities of academia as the norm for K-12 standards. Research is STILL being done at the academic level, libraries and librarians are STILL vital to the academic success of students both at the K-12 and academic levels, and information literacy is not only required for all levels of education, it is vital for everyday life. No other person within the K-12 school community knows AND teaches these components better than the school librarian. In short...school librarians in well-supported school libraries build well-rounded, productive, and enlightened students for our future. ~Shonda -- Shonda Brisco Assistant Professor / Curriculum Materials Librarian Mary L.
