I am in a PreK - 3rd school and this year to encourage the kids to read more books
and not be concerned about points we are using AR to track the number of books the
school as a whole reads and if we read 2010 books for the 09-10 school year the
kids are going to have movie party, with treats and special rewards for the classes
that read the most. I have found that many times the kids who are slow readers miss
out on the rewards because the books they read are low points and this way everyone
contributes. The other thing I'm doing this year is starting a lunch club for the
kids that are low readers. They will get have lunch in the library and listen to an
audio book of their choice then take the test. Since they will be coming weekly
they can finish the longer books and get more points for their trips. On the whole
I don't like AR or the way teachers, in our building, are so strict about staying
on level and getting the points for the trips, but I can also see how the classroom
teacher can use it in place of a book report to track students reading. With so
much emphasis being placed on the achievement test each year, it also helps prepare
the students for computer testing which Oklahoma is moving toward. Mary Taylor
