Original Target: I am interested in middle grade graphic novels that deal with storytelling, including (but not limited to): - Characters who tell stories - Characters who read stories - Characters who write stories - The author's craft - Books that rely on intertextuality for meaning Response: I'm not sure if this is exactly relevant to what you're looking for, however: in Bone by Jeff Smith, Fone Bone is obsessed with Moby Dick. He references it in conversation and has dreams that pull in imagery from the book. It pulls the Bones' adventures into contact or contrast with the iconic nature of adventure stories, suggesting perhaps, that they are connected to a larger history of stories. Also, in the lovely, wordless graphic novel The Arrival, by Shaun Tan, some of the immigrant characters share their stories with each other, mostly about the harsh natures of the places they left behind. It is un-textual, but vivid all the same. -- Stephanie Light MSIS expected May 2010 University at Albany stephanielight@live.com -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
