I heard what I think is one of the all-time saddest commentaries on the state of technology in public schools while watching an old sci-fi movie (can't remember which one -- I've seen so many -- hubby is a junkie). In the midst of some catastrophe threatening "life as we know it," two characters gain possession of what they believe to be valuable information. The problem? It's in an antiquated medium, and they are momentarily puzzled as to where they might find the outdated hardware or machinery needed to decipher it. After only the briefest of pauses, the characters realize at the same moment that they both know the obvious answer: the town's public school. And off they rush to the only place they can think of where they would certainly find technology that nobody else has used in years. And this scene wasn't played for laughs. How sad. A word of caution--we have sent many older overhead projectors to fixed assets over the 4 years that I have been in this position. The district is now in the midst of implementing Spence Rogers' programs. He believes that we should junk lcd projectors and go back to overheads. Now we are purchasing new overheads! I have what seems like 5 million alpha smarts, tape recorders, and overhead projectors, for example.
