Does this ring a bell with anyone? A boy goes to the store and buys a fish. His grandmother (or some other character) tells him not to feed the fish something and he does. The fish grows bigger and bigger until finally it has to be put in a swimming pool. At the conclusion of the story the fish returns to normal size. We're thinking the book is around a second grade reading level. This rang no bells with me, but I'm sure there is someone out there more well-read than me who will recognize the story line. I'll post the answer to the list.
