The Question:
We bought a flip video camera to do video trailers for our books. We
have students doing them. Our TV production guy says he cannot show them
on the Morning Show because they are not the right format. He says they
are in in an Mpeg 4 and they need converted to AVI or WMA format. Do we
need a converter or a cable or what? HELP

The AnswerS:

* You can go to zamzar.com and upload your video file, tell it
what file you want it converted to and give it your e-mail address.
Video files sometimes take a few hours, but at some point that same day,
zamzar will e-mail you with a link to download the "new" file.

        Easy peasy.
*
        Try using Zamzar.com

*

        Here is a link that has online tools to submit your video to,
pick what format you want it converted to and then they will email it
back to you. Some take time and I have found that I need to use my gmail
account because it gets stopped from coming into a school account.

        Good luck!

        Can you convert with Zamzar? Zamzar - Free online file
conversion

*

        I think that there are free downloads that you can get over the
internet. I can't suggest one as all are blocked in our district but I
have done it at home. google "mpeg4 to AVI free download"

*

        There is a website that you can convert video format and there
is a free version. It is called Any Video Converter at
http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/
<http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/>

* You can convert your files using Windows Moviemaker which (I
believe) is standard with the Windows OS (there are also Mac
equivalents).

        You could also convert your files online (free) with Zamzar.com,
but there is a 100MB limit on file size.

        Hope this helps.

        We had some 1st generation Flip video cameras that recorded in
AVI format. Our newest Flip cameras, however, record in Mpeg4 format. If
you happen to find out there is a way to change settings on the Flip
video itself, please let me know. I suspect there is, but haven't had
time to figure it out.

* Try the free Audacity utility online.

*       Try www.zamzar.com

        It converts formats. I don' t know if it will help, but it's
worth trying.

* www.zamzar.com is a great resource to transfer files up to 100
mb. I think they include AVI and WMA as formats.

* I'm sure someone has already responded to this, but just in
case, here's what I do! I take the movies from the flipcam, open them in
a program like Moviemaker, add an opening slide with the book cover
image, the name of the student presenting the book, that sort of thing,
and save the video in WMA format. It's so so easy.

* You can download a converter at
http://www.any-video-converter.com <http://www.any-video-converter.com/>

        Note that I create a video in the Flip software and then use
Windows Moviemaker to create a video that I then convert to AVI file.

* There are several programs that do video conversion. You could
do a search like Mpeg4 to .AVI or use SUPER C
http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html. It's a great free converter.

* Go to dvdvideosoft.com and download the free converter. I use it
all the time.

* Try using zamzar.com. It's free and while it make take a few
minutes for them to email you the conversion, we

        use it all the time. Simply select your file, the in step two
select what you want it converted to (video is way at the bottom).

        Good luck!

*       Try itunes or zamzar.com

* Download the free program "Format Factory"
(http://www.formatoz.com/ <http://www.formatoz.com/> ) and use that. It
is perhaps the best freeware conversion program I know of.

*       Zamzar.com would convert them

* Couple of suggestions (I'm assuming you're on a PC - if not, let
me know and I'll send the Mac instructions to you):

        Flip Video is a flavor of DIVX - your guy could choose to
install the Flip Codec (which is on the camera) and then he could play
them from his computer.

        To convert them to WMV, import the videos into Windows Movie
Maker, then you can export them to WMV or whatever format needed (just
know that the machine will need the Flip codec, too). Once it's a WMV,
it'll play on Windows Media Player easily.

        Good luck - if you need some step by steps or further info, call
or email me and I'll walk you through.

*       I use a few sites.

        http://www.youconvertit.com/convertfiles.aspx

        http://media-convert.com/
*
        I can help you with that . . . you can use zamzar at zamzar.com
or there is a better file converter that I can give to you, but I'm not
at my office. Please email me if you don't get any responses, and I'll
send it to you from school tomorrow.
