I would suggest the following:

Giants In The Earth by Rolvaag (1927)--about upper midwest immigrant
farmers/pioneers
The Way West by A.B. Guthrie (1950)--Pulitzer Prize--about travel
Westward on the Oregon Trail
The Sea Of Grass by Conrad Richter (1936)--epic conflict between
ranchers and sodbusters
Travels Of Jamie McPheeters by Robert Lewis Taylor (1959)--won
Pulitzer--Huck traveling West
Buffalo Woman by Dorothy M. Johnson (1977)--both woman and native
american points of view
as West seen through life from 1820-1877.
By more contemporary authors
Home Mountain by Jeanne Williams (1990)--16 year old main character in

southwest frontier
Out Of Eden by Kate Lehrer (1996)--reminds one of Edith Wharton and
Cather or cross between
    Jane Austen and Little House
Night Birds by Thomas Maltman (2007)--immigrant Minnesota farmers/
pioneers plus Native-
Americans--both pioneer motifs plus exemplifies contemporary
author
