Hello Frederick,
never one to encourage confrontation or controversy (grin)...
just ask anyone. . .
My immediate response might go something like:
"You're such a smart, curious, and thoughtful young student.
I bet you're adopted!"
At least that will give the student a response from you
when the parents learn what s/he told you and then asks,
"What did Mr. Muller say?" 
Keep it handy and feel free to alter the response for
any number of insulting situations that may arise in
your library...

One of my library rug rats (someone who pops in all the time) stopped
by today and said to me "I wanted to give you a present, but my mom
said no because you are not a real teacher."  I must say that did not
make my day!
