Fortunately, for every slap there are several grateful students and their
parents, and even some of the teachers with whom we collaborate. I am
usually more taken aback when the slap (however inadvertent) comes from within
the school.
Two weeks ago a recent graduate stopped by to say hi (he loves the library,
did a ton of learning in it with me, and always comes back to say hi and
even help out). He said he needed some reference letters, but when he
asked our guidance counselor if he should ask me for one, she told him no, the
letters had to come from "real teachers." SIGH. :-)
I am far better at letting these things roll off me that I used to be. I
used the opportunity to at least educate this student that I have the same
teacher certification as everyone else in the building, hoping that he will
be a messenger to the outside world if the topic should arise again. I am
already confident that he views me as a true teacher. And yes, he asked
me for a reference letter in spite of her advice. One person at a time!
Permanence, perseverance and persistence in spite of all obstacles,
discouragements, and impossibilities: It is this, that in all things
distinguishes the strong soul from the weak. Thomas Carlyle
