While I have several plaques I have been awarded throughout the years for various honors, the things I'm the most proud of are my degrees. I have four degrees framed from Associates to Bachelors to Masters to Specialists along with the tassels from the last three graduations. I put these outside my office nearly 15 years ago to show them off. I'll never forget the one teacher who always made a big deal of pointing out to her students that Mr. Pope was a "real teacher" too because he had "went to school just like Mrs. So-An-So", etc. I was never sure if she was trying to convince the kids or herself. Ha.... Of course, her father was a business partner and came to some function in the library one day and wanted to know "just what goes on in this place?" referring to the library! I think back to one of my media professors who said something along the lines...."sometimes if you don't toot your own horn, it doesn't get tooted!" And in regard to those who posted about educating people about what we do...we surely do need to do that! If someone will stop by long enough to see what all we do! I used to have our video distribution system in my office so generally would just turn the TV on in the morning to PBS and it would run through whatever programming was on. No one ever came in and said, "Wow, Mr. Pope! You are really working hard cataloging and processing that stack of new books and A-V items!" Instead I would hear, "Are you watching Barney!" Ha... The same professor mentioned above also said, "They don't care how things get processed and on the shelves for circulation, they just care they are there when they need them." Whenever I get on a soapbox to education some unknowing soul about how those materials magically get on the shelves, their eyes glaze over, the go to their happy place, and tune me out anyway. :) Wishing all my library co-horts in cyberland, Peace...no matter what holiday you celebrate! How many of us have our diplomas/credentials framed and displayed in our media centers? I believe it was Harry Wong who suggested that many years ago.
