I'm on an urban fantasy kick this season--and am thoroughly enjoying my alternate 
reality escapism with strong characters, neat mixes of various mythologies, and 
interesting mysteries. Here are my three faves so far: 

C.E. Murphy's Walker Papers series (Urban Shaman, Thunderbird Falls and Coyote 
Dreams)--mix of Celtic and Native American mythology 
Kelly Gay's Better Part of Darkness (imagine NCIS with a female Gibbs, in an 
alternate reality set in Atlanta, GA, after other dimensions have gone public) 
Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series (Magic Bites, Magic Burns. . .)--shapershifters, 
vampires (as vehicles for masters of the undead), knights and police--all working 
in a world where magic is trying to come back and "hits" with interesting effects 
on technology and life in our tech-dependent time
