I just experiened it myself this past week. The topic of my position as a librarian
came up. I was asked what I do and I said "I am a librarian". The person responded
"oh, I thought your were a teacher." I responded with "I thought I was too."

I remember saying to my high school librarian that he wasn't a real teacher. Let's
say that it didn't go over well. I can't say that I followed him into the
profession (I had already decided to be a librarian, at my mother's suggestion,
about age 12), but the work that I was allowed to do in that high school library in
addition to shelving books (inventory, typing of records on the punch cards of the
1970s, working at the magazine desk, etc.) was a great help to me later.
I like the idea of being a teacher librarian, but my county uses the term, media
specialist. Sometimes I change my name and address tag and add that term anyway!
Because I am in a small school, I even do part-time reading intervention and edit
the school newsletter, so I could have a title a mile long!
But since there are now full-time speech teachers, guidance counselors,
intervention teachers, math and reading specialists and all kinds of people who
come in and out of our schools these days, the idea that the homeroom teacher is
the be-all and end-all has retreated a bit. But I notice that one has to
re-emphasize the value of "other" staff every couple years to make sure that the
newer staff members realize this! As my supervisor (a former student who sort of
followed me into the profession) says, "promote, promote, promote your library
program!"

Dear wonderful library people,
Years ago when my kids were small I took a one day a week job at a very small
public school in the country. The library had been neglected/ignored for decades.
My degree was fresh in my pocket and I decided to make an impact every day I was
there--start a Texas Bluebonnet voting program, do story hour, display new books in
the teachers' lounge, visit classrooms, etc. etc. After what I thought was a very
good year, the yearbooks came out in May. There was a Faculty page, but my picture
was on the Staff page, between the bus driver and the cafeteria lady. I still get a
good laugh every time I think of it...

Well, I've been reading these posts too, and have been called a Pollyanna in the
past (with good reason!), but what I took from the original post was not that Fred
didn't get a gift, it was that he was not regarded as a teacher. After 20 years in
the field, this is typical in my experience, but I've learned to get over it and
just offer what I have in a positive way to the students and teachers. We're all in
this together, IMHO; my new young partner is still stinging from the comments, but
I keep assuring her "this too shall pass" ;). Happy New Year to all!

I was going to suggest we close this thread, and then we had a few really positive
turns, such as from Deb Logan, Ray Barber, Stacey Wicksall, and Deborah Stafford
with some of the comments below. Let's keep the idea of turning a potential
negative to something that affirms the good work you all do.

*****snip*****
we all need to carry the message of the important role you all play, but be of good
cheer, rejoice in what you do.

I love the idea of the Ken Burns style video and feel it has excellent
potential....If we want to be regarded as educators/ teachers, then we need to
sound,
look, talk and act like educators. Instead of a video showing things that people
already have stereotyped images of us doing (opening boxes
of books, shelving books, cataloging books, repairing books, etc.), focus the video
on meeting w/teachers, teaching, grading, doing lesson
plans, reading our National Standards, working on Web pages, assisting students at
the computer, and these types of activities.
This is a great opportunity to educate; let's send a message that helps people
shift rather than reinforce their paradigms.

stop and think who else in the school also get no cards or small gifts. True many
are not certified educators but do deserve to be remembered. People such as the
Nurse, Secretaries, Janitor, Cafeteria workers.

I will be making a note of others in our building that receive few, if any kudos,
throughout 2010. I plan on keeping this wonderful spirit alive by sending out a
few wee Santa cards of my own.
