Speaking as a professional artist and Librarian, you can do this activity as long 
as:

1. the items are not sold or used to raise funds
2. that credit is given to the original artist
(*** by ###, based on the artwork by ***)
3. that this credit line is visible should the artwork be in a show (this does NOT 
cover artwork that is visible on the internet in any form and written permission 
from the original artist would be necessary for that)
4. that the item is not for sale unless written permission has been given by the 
original artist
(written permission must be on hand with the original given to the purchaser should 
the item be sold)

I say go for it! I did this with our first grade, using Eric Carle as our base for 
creating an original work of art, using his technique. The students loved it and 
made quite a happy  mess. : )
