Until 2007 I bought into (at least to some extent) the argument that World Book
was carefully edited, written by experts, checked and rechecked, etc., and was a
reliable source. In May 2007 SLJ ran an article (link below) about how the
Mandarin-language version of World Book had been edited to accommodate the official
Chinese government viewpoint on such issues as the status of Taiwan, the Tienanmen
Square events, and the Falun Gong movement. A couple of emails to the World Book
management did nothing to allay my concerns that the encyclopedia had been edited
specifically to enable the company to break into the Chinese market.
Reliable and accurate? Who knows when market considerations may trump honesty and
accuracy?

Subject: Why NOT Wikapedia

Looking for some brief hard cold facts as to why wikapedia is should not be
a "citeable" source for research. Presenting to faculty today and there are
some big advocates of it who will claim it is just as reliable as Worldbook.
