Kristina, Perhaps the best reason to not use Wikipedia is the disclaimer on the Wikipedia website itself. I ask students to click on the disclaimer button, where they themselves discover that it states that Wikipedia makes and I quote "No Guarantee of Validity". Once I show them that, they are satisfied. For years we have evaluated reference material based on accuracy, authorship and authority. As long as Wikipedia considers itself an encyclopedia, should we not hold it up to the same standards as the other encyclopedias? As far as the Nature study, this has been an on-going battle. Perhaps you should read the response from Britannica. (http://corporate.britannica.com/britannica_nature_response.pdf) If Wikipedia is going to be an encyclopedia then let us hold it up to the same standards as the others. I'm not sure why a student or any researcher, using the information they got from Wikipedia would not cite it. This just drives me crazy. If the teacher or professor wants to restrict students use of Wikipedia or ensure that other resources are used to verify the information found there that doesn't absolve the researcher's obligation to cite the source no matter how inaccurate, in error, or whatever, that source is. The issue is not citation--it's use--and that has to be determined by the teacher. Some teachers also don't want kids to use general encyclopedias and they say the same thing, "Don't cite the World Book or Britannica." Once again that doesn't make sense to me. If you are using it as a source then you should be citing it. I know this is long answer to a short question but it just pushes my buttons when we and other teachers don't seem to understand the purpose of citation and are giving their students the wrong message about what and why to cite. I can understand the reticence for younger students, but I think MS and HS students are perfectly capable of using wikipedia as an initial source. We don't allow them to cite it (or ANY general encyclopedia), but it's fine for general background or instant information. Students should be taught to verify ANY information found online, and we risk becoming irrelevant and sounding curmudgeonly when we go off on wiki-rants. As long as students are taught the problems inherent with the source, I don't see a problem.
