[LM_NET] series name?

My assistant principal is trying to 
remember the name of a series that
she read in the early 70's about a man and 
his son or sons who go on adventures such as
down the Nile River.  She thinks the author
might have been Pierce, Pearce, Pearson.......
not sure.
Does anyone recognize the series?
