The Lost-and-Found Tooth by Louise Borden; illustrated by Adam Gustavson (McElderry Books, 2008). ISBN: 978-4169-1814-1 Louise Borden has added another title to her growing list of picture book/chapter book hybrids which includes, among others, The John Hancock Club, The Day Eddie Met the Author, and Good Luck, Mrs. K! In this new addition, second grader Lucy is the only one in Mr. Reilly's class not to have lost a tooth, making her ineligible to add an event to the teacher's Who's Lost a Tooth? calendar. The classroom situations and dialogue are true to second grade school life making it a great read aloud. The text is simple and straight forward, easy for a second or third grade reader to navigate. Smaller than a standard picture book, but beautifully illustrated in full color, it occupies a space between the larger picture books and the smaller trim size of the traditional easy reader. Consider this title for second grade read aloud or for newly independent young readers who want a chapter book but aren't quite ready for one.
