[LM_NET] TARGET: colonists lesson

We need help!  I am working on a research project with our 5th graders and we are 
stuck.  We are trying to make an ABC book of 26 items the Colonists Could Live 
Without in which they are to come up with things that the colonists didn't have 
that we have
today - things that would have made their life easier but that it wasn't impossible 
to live without (i.e. hot water heater, electricity, furnace, etc.).  They have to 
find information such as when these things were invented and by whom as well as what
the colonists did instead.  We are stuck on the letters U and Y.  The "typical" 
answers of umbrella and yo-yo don't work because both have been around for 
thousands of years.  Another school did this activity and used UPS for U and then 
researched the
mailing system in general.  Any other ideas????  Thanks!
