Original Target:

We are planning to have the students use MovieMaker to create short
video presentations on different aspects of the Civil War with intent to
upload to teachertube or schooltube. This will be a 3-way collaboration
between me, language arts and social studies. I am so tickled. What I
would like to see are some rubrics that others are using for this type
of project. I will be happy to post a hit when I get some responses.

Responses:

Are you familiar with Rubistar4teachers website?

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I was going to suggest that you might
want to use photostory. It is a free down loadable program from Microsoft. It is
a bit more user friendly and has music you can use; whereas, movie maker requires
you to import your own music from somewhere else.

I used a rubric from Iowa that I found on the website listed above. I also am
using PhotoStory3 as suggested. The students are hot and heavy into the project
and we hope to have a few finish next week. The assignment with rubrics are
located at the following website.

The project is still a work in progress, but we are pretty happy with it. We think
we will repeat the activity next fall around October and change the focus to the
revolutionary war. The issue with that topic a will be shortage of images. But
that is another school year. The other social studies teacher in the same grade is
interested in trying the project next 9 weeks with a focus on World War II. I also
have a web design project to do with a science teacher using the same students.
One of the girls was disappointed that we did not create web quests like I did with
last year's students, so I had to round up a teacher willing to try a new project.
Sometimes success is scary.

Neat thing that has already come from this activity. We occasionally move lower
ability students into an upper ability class to affect a behavior change. The
lower ability student stops being so disruptive in a class of highly grade
motivated students and occasionally gets better grades as well. Yesterday one of
our top students (somewhat snobbish) needed help with a technical skill since he
was absent the day I taught it. Our transplanted student jumped up and offered to
teach the skill for me, and with a bit of coaching on my part, did a fantastic job.
My heart about fell apart. Moments like that will keep me going for years.

Thanks for the support and encouragement from this group. I can't tell you how
many times I have gathered inspiration and help from other posts and questions.
Keep up the good work. This group rocks!
