I have an English teacher who is searching for some contemporary (80s,
90s to today) authors to introduce to her 10th grade class. They are
tired of reading "stuff from old people." I have some thoughts, but I
wanted to get ideas from all of you. YA or obtainable adult authors are
the goal.

I need your opinion! I am incensed at the moment because of Accelerated
Reader testing. Today is the cut-off day for the six weeks, and I have
found several 7th graders in here reading and taking tests on 1 and 2
point books. What do you think? Should I completely remove the books
and tests? Should I calm down and allow this? I want to just take them
off the shelves now but realize the lower-level kids could benefit from
them. Please help calm me down!

Subject: Target: KOHA

My county is looking at KOHA as a possible replacement for Spectrum. We are
just getting started, but already have some major concerns, such as scanning
multiple bar codes when checking in or checking out books. It appears that
only one bar code can be entered at the time. Also, our tech folks
would like to run all of the schools from one server, but it also appears
that we will have a problem with duplicate material numbers and patron
numbers. If you use KOHA in a school setting, I would appreciate hearing
from you. Addressing these specific issues or any comments in general will
be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Subject: Target: Summer reading book sales

I am wondering if any of you have ever sold books to your students for =
summer reading and could provide some advice. I have been asked (by my =
head of school) to take orders from the parents, purchase the books, then =
package them to give the students. Most of our teachers provide a list for =
the students to choose from. They are not all required to read the same =
books. Many years ago, the parents had a summer reading book fair, where a =
local book store brought in many of the books and the parents could come =
in and purchase them. I have never done anything like this except for when =
I've sold books for an author visit. This will all be done towards the end =
of the school year while I am trying to finish my inventory, get in all of =
the books and still have weekly library classes. If anyone has done =
something like this in the past, I would love any advice/suggestions on =
how to go about it.
Thank you so much.

Subject: New Research Paper: How Children Search the Internet with Keyword
Interfaces

Greetings from DC!

Over on ResourceShelf (http://www.resourceshelf.com) we just linked to =20
a new research paper placed online in the past day or so. I thought =20
would be of interest to some of you. It was co-authored by researchers =20
at the University of Maryland and Google.

Title: How Children Search the Internet with Keyword Interfaces

 From the Abstract:
"Children are among the most frequent users of the Internet, yet =20
searching and browsing the web can present many challenges. Studies =20
over the past two decades on how children search were conducted with =20
finite and pre-determined content found in CD-ROM applications, online =20
digital libraries, and web directories. However, with the current =20
popularity of the open Internet and keyword-based interfaces for =20
searching it, more critical analysis of the challenges children face =20
today is needed. This paper presents the findings of our initial study =20
to understand how children ages 7, 9, and 11 search the Internet using =20
keyword interfaces in the home. Our research has revealed that =20
although today?s children have been exposed to computers for most of =20
their lives, spelling, typing, query formulation, and deciphering =20
results are all still potential barriers to finding the information =20
they need."
