I would also like to add to this list of YA books with a tolerance/racism theme: Rebound by Bob Krech. This is about a young man who joins the basketball team as the only white student on the team. Traditionally, in his high school, the white kids are on the wrestling team and the black kids are on the basketball team. His family is part of the blue-collar white community and he makes his first black friends while also having an effect on his white friends who struggle with their reactions to his basketball playing. The themes of socioeconomic status, racism and cultural stereotypes are dealt with in this well-written book.
