I just listened to this fascinating and balanced documentary on copyright. It gives the history of the concept: when it was adopted in Great Britain to encourage creativity, through the reluctant inclusion by the fathers of the new United States of America to encourage the immigration of inventors to benefit the union; and the broadening and lengthening of laws that enabled Disney, which built its empire on old free-market stories, to now own all royalties on icons like Mickey into the mid 2020's. It gives a balanced look at the current state of policy in the U.S. and Canada and the more-or-less sudden implication of individuals as opposed to corporations. ...a must-hear for anyone involved in Copyright....which, really, is everyone!
