The Diana Wynne Jones fantasies are somewhat challenging and quite wonderful.  The 
more difficult ones include The Dark Lord of Derkholm and its sequel.
Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve - very cool futuristic series called The Hungry City 
Chronicles
Epic by Conor Kostick?  might be too sophisticated
Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett & its sequels - very funny magical, fighting 6" 
tall blue men
