.....but what is the general feeling and what are the legal ramifications on public
school student checkout history. I'm in a county with central processing (thank
you, Lord!) and a county media services coordinator (also a blessing at most
times!). The coordinator and the media specialists have an ongoing feud about our
rights to see the student's check-out history. Since we have a central circulation
system, the coordinator controls most of the settings.

The coordinator feels it is a legal issue and a violation of a student's privacy
for us to see back more than one title of what a student has checked out. Meanwhile
I often have books turned in damp...they get checked in in the rush of circulation,
then a week later they are filled with mildew and must be withdrawn...I have no way
at that point to tell who checked the book out.

Students sometimes get ready to takle an SRC quiz, but they forgot the title of the
book they read....I can't look it up for them.

We are undergoing renovations and made a move to a portable facility, We were in
various stages of open and closedness for six weeks. The students were issued clear
guidelines about due dates, etc, but of course not all followed them. Now I have
students with hefty fines, but once the book is turned in, I can't tell when it was
checked out (other than by calculating $.05 per day, which may not be very
accurate). Students are swearing they checked out their books during the "grace"
week, but I have no way to tell.

I have access to almost every record imagineable for the students in my school,
including discipline, attendance, grades, medical, home contact, etc, but it is
against their rights for me to see what library book they had last month?

Long day...going home!
