This position is available beginning July 1, 2009. Responsibilities for the Library Director include: * Directing and supporting a staff of 9 (4 librarians, ½ time archivist/librarian, 5 support staff) in fulfilling the library mission. * Coordinating all library accounts and expenditures. * Coordinating collection development and management including serial (on line and print) and online database subscriptions. (Current acquisitions budget is $700,000.) * Participating in the delivery of many library services including reference desk responsibility. * Coordinating library assessment, continuous improvement and marketing initiatives. * Representing the Library to the campus community (member of the Academic Council and other campus committees) as well as to neighboring Syracuse University with whom the Library shares a library management system and library resources. * Working with the College Archivist in promoting the resources and services of the College Archives and Special Collections. * Working with the Friends of Moon Library to promote the resources and services of the Moon Library. * Working with small branch library collections at remote campus properties (Adirondack Ecological Center, Ranger School and Cranberry Lake Biological Station). About the College: Founded in 1911, the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry is the nation's oldest and most respected school dedicated to the study of the environment, developing renewable technologies and building a sustainable future. The ESF campus occupies 12 acres adjacent to Syracuse University and 25,000 acres on its regional campuses throughout Central New York and the Adirondack Park. The ESF student body consists of approximately 1,500 undergrads and 600 graduate students. ESF alumni number more than 16,000 worldwide. ESF offers 22 undergraduate and 26 graduate degree programs in the sciences and engineering and landscape architecture. Franklin Moon Library (http://www.esf.edu/moonlib) supports the college's specialized disciplines including biology, chemistry, engineering, forestry, environmental science, and landscape architecture. Offering some 135,000 volumes, more than 800 print journal subscriptions, and hundreds of electronic journals and databases, the Moon Library extends its collection by sharing resources with neighboring Syracuse University. In particular we share over 400 electronic databases and thousands of electronic journals which are available to the SUNY-ESF community. The library staff includes four full-time professional librarians, a part-time archivist/special collections librarian, 5 support staff, and 18 student workers. It has an annual acquisition budget of $700,000. The mission of the Moon Library is to provide information resources to the ESF community and to teach library users to learn independently. About the Community: SUNY-ESF is located in the "University Hill" section of Syracuse, a mid-sized metropolitan area with plentiful cultural and civic opportunities. The Places Rated Almanac ranks Syracuse among the top 10 percent of "Best Places to Live". People from all over the world who settled in the area have enriched its diverse history. Syracuse is within a five-hour drive of New York City, Toronto, Montreal, and Boston. The Syracuse metropolitan area has 732,000 residents that live in a region characterized by rolling hills, flat plains, abundant lakes, and waterfalls. There are more than 50 state, county, and city parks and several nature centers in the area. Central New York also has many opportunities for seasonal outdoor recreational activities. Lake Ontario and New York's Finger Lakes are less than an hour's drive and the six million acre Adirondack Park - the largest publicly protected area in the contiguous United States - is within a three-hour drive. The area boasts a wide variety of cultural organizations and activities such as a symphony, an opera, many fine theaters and museums. Minimum Qualifications: MLS or equivalent degree and five years of supervisory/ administrative experience in an academic library. Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated strength in: verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and information technology skills. Additional desired traits include active participation in professional library organizations, a science background, and other relevant advanced degrees.
