I got lots of great responses to my question about running a book swap. We lost
part of our RIF funding last year so we're going to try this as another avenue to
get books into kids' hands. Many people sent examples of letters, flyers, forms,
and tickets as attachments to me. I've included their contact information in case
you'd like to get a copy of their attachments, too.
Thanks, everyone!

Becky

We did it by giving coupons for a book for each two that were donated.
We put them on tables by grade level and they came in and bought books
with their coupons.

I'm including the flyer we used to promote ours when I was at a K-5 campus. We
bought a roll of tickets, and when kids brought in books, they wrote their names on
the backs of the tickets [1 ticket for paperback, 2 tickets for hardbacks]. We
then put those tickets in an envelope with their name and their teacher's name. We
held onto the envelopes until the first day of the swap.

We sorted the books into three levels: picture books, beginning chapter books, and
longer novels.

On swap day, kids got their ticket envelopes and came during their whole-class
checkout time [we had a flexible schedule, but most teachers also did a weekly
whole-class checkout time, as well]. The kids with tickets got to pick books. If
at the end they still had tickets, they could donate their left-over tickets. We
strongly encouraged this. Then, we used the donated tickets to catch kids being
character leaders and would award donated tickets. [Ironically, it was the kids
who didn't have tickets to donate who always ended up as our character leaders...
funny how that happens.... ;-) ]

Most parents were thrilled by this idea because we lived in an upper-middle class
neighborhood, so many of the children had bookshelves overflowing with books. They
loved sending in bags of books and only getting three or four back.

Then, anything that was left over after all that, was placed in our reading tree.
If you couldn't checkout because you still had a library book, you got to borrow a
tree book to bring back with your checked out book. That way everyone got at least
one new book a week from the library.

One year, we still had so many left over books, that we boxed them up and sent them
to some of the local emergency rooms in the area. Most of these places still have
magazines, but I've never been in an emergency room where there wasn't at least one
child.

Hope this helps...

We've had several over the years. We also have yard sales in our school each year
to support our Walk for a Cure team (Am. Cancer Society) and our extra books would
be welcome there.

I suggest you ask for books ahead of time from past students and their parents. You
always want to have lots of extra books to choose from. We had a real problem with
our children bringing in picture books to trade and wanting chapter books to take.
We did ask that the books be gently used and that each book be near the child's
reading level. You might also want to give coupons for a each book as students
bring in the books and then have a day to select a new book a bit later.

Have fun!
