Please visit the ALSC Web site at http://www.ala.org/alsc and click on "Issues and
Advocacy" for full details. There is in fact a recent law that addresses this; the
government agency charged with implementing it, the Consumer Product Safety
Commission, is working NOW on regulations. Full implications and requirements of
the law are not yet known, but ALA is advocating on behalf of all libraries in
order to lessen the law's impact on us.

There is no action that librarians need to take at the moment with regard to their
collections; however, actions to take now including educating yourselves about this
issue and/or contacting the Consumer Product Safety Commission and your elected
officials with your concerns. Information available from ALA includes some
background information, sample text of a letter, and contact information.

Good luck, and thank you for inquiring about this!

Subject: [LM_NET] Target: Consumer Products Safety Act 2008 and ALA

I got an email from ALA stating that there is to be some legislation that may
require children's books to be tested for lead. The Consumer Products Safety Act,"
has been interpreted to include books as a product that must be tested for lead."

Did anyone else get this? What implications does it have for libraries?
