I'm a quilter, like Lisa. And from my research and conversations with our FACS (Family & Consumer Science teacher), historians cannot find any WRITTEN corroboration about quilts being used signals. Families who were helping runaways didn't write anything down in journals or diaries for fear of being found out. Or having the items fall into the wrong hands if their homes were searched. And many of the runaways could not read or write to leave a record themselves. ~ VAN Diane Van Gorden, Librarian Baker High School Baker Middle School PO Box 659 Baker, MT 59313-0659 voice 406-778-3329 fax 406-778-2785 email: vangordend @ baker.k12.mt.us books. cats. quilts. life is good! -----Original Message----- From: School Library Media & Network Communications [mailto:LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU] On Behalf Of McCulloch, Lisa - Librarian Sent: Monday, January 26, 2009 9:55 AM To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: Re: TARGET: Websites About the Underground Railroad & Quilts I am a quilter. It is a nice story, but it is a story. If it were true some of the quilts would have survived and cherished family heirlooms or at least show up in antique stores. I am unaware of any surfacing. Nice story that I wish were true, but evidence does not support it.
