Nonfiction picture books written to both tell an engaging story and 
convey accurate factual information are particularly sought after 
selections in the school library media center and public library 
children's room.  Author/illustrator Chrustowski is especially adept 
at the genre as evidenced by his latest title, Big Brown Bat.  He 
brings the most common member of the bat family in North America to 
life by focusing on one mother bat and her young son.  With large, 
clear illustrations, Chrustowski conveys a wealth of information 
about physical characteristics, family and young, behavior, and 
habitat in simple and enjoyable prose.  This will be a perfect book 
to offer to first-time researchers or to use when teaching beginning 
note-taking skills.  Suggested ages 4-9.
