L is for Lolly Gag: Quirky Words for a Clever Tongue (Chronicle, 
2008).  ISBN: 978-0-8118-6021-5

Somehow I missed this title earlier in 2008 but as I do my final 2008 
reviews, I wanted to give it an extra nod.  You really must not miss 
this fabulously useful and engaging book!  Your teachers will love 
you for it (put a copy in the professional collection too), your 
"wordy" kids and your gifted kids will love it, and it will add a 
good deal of fun to your 400's!  Why?  Because this book, a 
dictionary of sorts, is a collection of some of the coolest, oddest 
words in the English language.  Like a dictionary, it gives part of 
speech, pronunciation, and definition for each word.  Unlike a 
dictionary, it's not at all comprehensive.  But it IS 125 pages of 
vocabulaic fun, filled with the likes of 'conniption,' 'kabosh,' and 
'roustabout,' among hundreds more fantastically quaint and quirky 
words.  One final delightful element is that many of the definitions 
employ OTHER of the quirky words in the book.  For instance, the 
definition of 'curmudgeon' is "a grumpy and opinionated person. The 
curmudgeon's archenemy is the young WHIPPERSNAPPER." Curmudgeons, 
whippersnappers, and other quirky folk are sure to keep this book 
circulating. [Suggested Grades: 3-12]
