While I am thrilled with the illustrations in the Caldecott winner (and the fact that many students have a personal experience with scratchboard art - AND I can get cheap materials from art supply stores!) I have been having trouble reading the text. Until today.... I'm probably slower than the rest of you to discover that this book presents a great opportunity to discuss word choice and how poets try to carefully select FEW words. So, after students reacted to the text ("what's with that?" kind of looks on their faces) I had an epiphany to have students suggest more familiar phrasing of the ideas. Just wanted to share and maybe start a discussion about your students reaction to the book.
