Dear Monica
You invoke us to stay warm but many of your Australian colleagues are doing their
utmost to stay
cool as we battle temperatures in the mid -40s (113+F) for about the 5th day in a
row! There will
be a cool change maybe Sunday that will bring temps down to 38 (100F) but then back
up again. Where
I am, in the mountains, it has been constantly around 38 (100F) but, unlike our
city cousins, we are
not equipped with aircon and so forth because such extremes are so rare they are
record-breaking.
Many schools do not have aircon either and this week is the kids' first of the new
academic year!
We watch the news reports of severe storms and snow in the northern hemisphere with
envy.

Perhaps there is an investigation in there somewhere - why are different parts of
the planet having
such extremes at the same time? Is it global warming or a rare but natural
phenomenon? Is it action
and reaction?

Barbara
