I just talked with Sony about the eBook offer. You do not have to have
a reader to view the books. You can download them onto 6 different
computers. The problem lies in doing that. The information from the
computer is stored in the library so the books need to be on a specific
computer. You can not put them on a network to access them.
At our school this would be a problem. There are 929 classics to choose
from and you can see the selection by going to ebookstore.sony.com.

You see, I don't believe that libraries should be drab places where
people sit in silence, and that's been the main reason for our policy of
employing wild animals as librarians.

Subject: HIT: Sony eBook Classics

It seems that many of us received the same offer from Sony, which makes
it sound like a general promotion. Some librarians have investigated
and found the listed website and support difficult to use, and no one
was able to be one of the "first 100 schools" -- or the "first 500
schools," in some versions -- to respond and receive free Sony Readers
on which to use the books. Apparently yes, one has to have the Sony
Reader to view the books, and you have to purchase a Reader between
9/1/08 and 3/31/09 for the offer to stand. Finally, the content doesn't
work on Macs.

In short: vague, difficult, and requires special hardware to be able to
use. It sounds like if you have a Sony Reader or are planning on
purchasing one (apparently currently upwards of $300), it may be worth
checking out. Otherwise, this sounds like a marketing ploy to sell the
Sony Reader.

All best wishes, and thanks to everyone who replied,
