You probably shouldn't be doing anything at all at this time since the jury is out on what libraries can or must do regarding this new legislation. The CPSIA (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act) can be found here: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpsia.pdf The American Library Association has information about how they are working with the Consumer Product Safety counsel on this. You can read about it here: http://www.ala.org/ala/aboutala/offices/wo/woissues/governmentinfo/cpsia/cpsia.cfm On June 9, 2009, the following was posted on the ALA District Dispatch site: "Currently, the Commission is not imposing penalties under the new standards for most books. The Commission has been presented with evidence by the publishing industry and others that so-called “ordinary books” as manufactured under present standards do not contain lead. This evidence has been provided so that publishers and distributors of ordinary children’s books might be granted an exemption from the testing requirements in the CPSIA. Today’s meeting is one in a series of sessions on this topic." [More available at the link below:] http://www.wo.ala.org/districtdispatch/index.php?s=CPSIA Basically the lead content in books is very small and is not considered to be harmful. As a result, ALA is hoping to have libraries and their books exempted from the process of eliminating anything with lead content. To stay up-to-date on this issue, bookmark the ALA District Dispatch website and watch for any new information that might come from meetings on this topic. (In the meantime, don't toss your books!!) *grin* ~Shonda -- Shonda Brisco Assistant Professor / Curriculum Materials Librarian Mary L.
