A couple of observations on this issue. I am not defending AASL, in fact I wrote them a letter asking for reconsideration. My suggestion is that they make the "permission" easier to get and to make a downloadable citation image librarians could use with their lesson plans. They could also make it clear that no fees will be made for individual teacher lesson plans. But: from the AASL page http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/aasl/guidelinesandstandards/learningstandards/permissions.cfm. "The Standards for the 21st-Century Learner represent a core work of the association and its value to the field. It is AASL's goal to see the learning standards used and implemented while at the same time ensuring that the value and integrity of the learning standards are maintained as the work of the association." I can understand that AASL would want to make sure any representation of the standards as well as any use of the standards does reflect what AASL has done. If people are at a workshop in which the AASL standards are shown but not completely and correctly stated would everyone in the workshop check to make sure they were not being misled? There needs to be a compromise here. Some mentions ISTE's standards. They apparently have the same concern. This is from the ISTE NETS for students page. http://www.iste.org/Content/NavigationMenu/NETS/ForStudents/2007Standards/NETS_for_Students_2007_Standards.pdf "World rights reserved. No part of this book may be reproduced or transmitted in any form or by any means-electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording, or by any information storage or retrieval system-without prior written permission from the publisher." I really don't think the issue is totally control of the content and I really don't think they would charge a school librarian wanting to use the content in a lesson plan a fee. If any one has been charged a fee for using the standards in a lesson plan it would be good to know.
