Well said, Jacquie! Promoting ourselves as 21st century educators is the only way
we will be able to combat the axing of our positions in schools today. I hope that
all professionals that are currently working in a school system will make sure they
get out of the library and become visible members of the learning community. This
means promotions to parents and the community, collaborations with teachers and
exciting children with the wonders of books and the infinite sources of information
that we can help them find. If we want to be indispensable, we need to step up to
the challenge.

Subject: Re: [LM_NET] Free the Standards for 21st Century Learners

We MUST resist this insanity with every tool we have. Carol says
"implementation of information literacy skills will go to the computer
teachers, not the librarians." This is a scenario I have done
everything possible to prevent since the first moment I went on the
internet. Too many people see us as virtually obsolete "keepers of the
books" as it is. These standards are our chance to be seen as the
cutting edge, 21st century educators that we are.

I hope everyone is also following this issue on Twitter (search
#freethestandards). I hope everyone will raise their voices in protest
at every opportunity.
