[LM_NET] TAR: Do you know this story?

My friend (who graduated in 1960) is trying to find the title to this story. He 
remembers reading it in high school. The story is about combat and training but by 
the end of the story you find out that the characters turned out to actually be 
ants. He thinks it might have been a story within a book or something from a book 
club.  Does this sound familiar to any of you?
