The following link is to a cnn article about a book challenge that is
getting out of hand. I know it is a public library but found it relevant to
school libraries. Scarry stuff censorship is.
http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/07/22/wisconsin.book.row/

I found the following from the article most interesting:

*"She and her husband also asked the library to obtain books about
homosexuality that affirmed heterosexuality, such as titles written by
"ex-gays," Maziarka said. **"All the books in the young-adult zone that
deal with homosexuality are gay-affirming. That's not balance," she said. *
*The library did not agree with the Maziarkas' suggestions"*

I feel that we sometimes shoot ourselves in the foot when we are not willing
to provide titles with controversial unpopular minority views. For as
controversial as it may be to provide titles about teen homosexuality so
much more controversial are topics such as memoirs of "ex gays" and
intellectual design.
