WOW! I got a ton of responses. The majority of schools across the US seem to open
in mid to late August and close the last week of May or first week of June. Some
schools open as early as the first week of August and close the first week of May.
Several folks responded that their STATE was on the same dates while others, like
Virginia, it depends when you are. Central VA where I am is under the "theme park
law" and can't open until after labor day, while some of the western areas of the
state open several weeks earlier. Also, Most schools librarians work the same days
as teachers do, although most stated they go in to get ready earlier on their own
time. NO one responded that they have year round school. This was just to
satisfy my curiosity nothing more. Thanks so much for all the info.

RE: data bases for new library
I couldn't do without EBSCOHost by EBSCO. We purchase through a private
school consortium but I'm sure you can contact them at
http://www.ebscohost.com/

Another can't do without is Opposing Viewpoints and Student Resource
Center Bronze both by InfoTrac at http://infotrac.thomsonlearning.com/

Good luck with your new library. How exciting is that!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------=
----=20
We use Ebsco, Grolier Online, Newsbank, SIRS,=C2=A0 and Student Resource
Center Gold.=C2=A0 I will definitely add Chronicle Guidance Career Files fo=
r
next year (It's only $50 with the print subscriptions that we already
have.)=C2=A0 and hope to add Facts on File (about =C2=BD of their databases=
).=20
Ebsco and the Grolier Online are my favorites.=C2=A0 Grolier includes at
least 5 sets of encyclopedias (including Americana), selected web links
and selected periodical links + dictionary and atlas just a click away.=20
It's really fun to teach students to use this.

I 've looked on other school's websites and found ideas, too.=C2=A0=20

Hope this helps!=20
---------------------------------------------------------------------------=
---=20

Must haves:

Facts on File Bloom's Literary Reference Online, Modern World History
Online, ProQuest's eLibrary Science and History Study Center, World Book
Online, and the online version of the OED.=C2=A0 We also have Thomson's
Encyclopedia of World Biography, which is an e-book, and I find it very
useful.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------=
-------=20
Our school has found Opposing Viewpoints from Cengage/Gale to be very valua=
ble for research projects. =C2=A0It provides a huge amount of information a=
nd home access for a very reasonable price I think. =C2=A0
Our state provides access to SIRS Knowledge Source as well as EBSCO for all=
school libraries, but if they didn=E2=80=99t I=E2=80=99d certainly purchas=
e one or both if funding allowed.
Good luck.

---------------------------------------------------------------
=C2=A0

You should look at these on trial.=C2=A0 ABC-CLIO and Facts On File social =
science can be redundant--FOF Science and Today's Science are good.

ABC-CLIO DATABASES--social sciences
FACTS ON FILE DATABASES--social sciences & science
OXFORD ART DATABASE
OXFORD MUSIC DATABASE
CQ RESEARCHER 7 GLOBAL RESEARCHER--current issues
MCGRAW-HILL ACCESS SCIENCE

The two MAGAZINE/NEWSPAPER DATABASES: GALE INFOTRAC (separate mag and newsp=
aper databases) & EBSCO MAS ULTRA (high school) & EBSCO NEWSPAPER are good

---------------------------------------------------------------------------=

Our students use the Gale Group and Wilson Web on a regular basis. You shou=

should be found under Gale Group.

I have already received some great suggestions for a book for my principal to read
related to our theme of "Key to Success--Unlocking Student
Potential". What I am really looking for is a story that actually has "keys"
or "unlocking something" within the story.

Here are the great suggestion I have already received (some of which we have
already used in past years):

The Little Engine that Could by Piper
Peep by Van Lieshout
Across the Alley by Michelson
Buzzy the Bumblebee" by Denise Brennan-Nelson
Thank You Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco
Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell

So if you have an idea with a Key or Lock or Unlocking within the story in a
picture book, please let me know!

I am starting a new position traveling to 3 elementary schools in the same
district. They all use Spectrum. I was going to make a Powerpoint to share
with the kids on how to use the Search feature but I just found out today
that the district will be replacing Spectrum sometime in the next year.

Does anyone have a Powerpoint on using Spectrum's search features I could
use? I am trying to get as much done this summer as possible.

Thanks in advance,

Deirdre

Subject: #FreeTheStandards
=20
To all,

Thank you for taking up the conversation about the need to =
#FreeTheStandards
from AASL's currently overly restrictive permissions for use. As Alice
noted, and as I explained in my blog posts on this, I grew frustrated =
while
trying to lead a workshop of librarians looking at the great new =
Standards
in Action book. We wanted to use some of the pages in that book, as well =
as
the standards themselves, and were shocked to discover that the current
permissions block those actions.

First, let me very clearly state that my disagreement with how AASL has
handled permissions for the Standards for the 21st Century Learner =
should in
no way be interpreted as an intention to break ties with AASL or ALA. I =
love
AASL and I love the new standards...in this case, it is just a bit of =
tough
love. AASL and ALA do a great deal of good for us and our profession, =
even
if we are sometimes frustrated with how they act as a large =
organization.
Over the past few years, I have seen ALA undergo some major changes. =
They
are working very hard to become more open, transparent, and human. Think =
of
#FreeTheStandards not as a call to leave AASL, but as a call to renew =
our
interest and participation in AASL by providing guidance on how we would
like them to proceed with a change.

I know that Julie Walker (AASL Director) and Allison Cline (Deputy =
Director)
as well as others have talked about this as being an unintentional
restriction. I fully understand that AASL probably did not mean to =
restrict
our ability to quote our standards in lesson plans, but that is an
unfortunate (and frequent) side effect of restrictive permission =
statements.

I also know that some people are talking about fair use of the =
standards.
While I am a huge champion of fair use, I must caution that it is a =
band-aid
and not a solution to the underlying problem here. Fair use is a tricky
little thing - it is not a law (except for very restrictive face-to-face
usage during credit bearing courses) but rather a guideline. In this =
case,
AASL's direct and specific denial of usage combined with their claims =
that
usage may include a fee, means that I would be uneasy about claiming =
fair
use here. Additionally, copyright infringement claims can be made at =
will;
AASL can let some people slide by with their claims of fair use and then =
go
after others in cases where they don't agree with the use of the =
standards
(i.e. alignment to gaming, a currently very hot and exciting topic =
within
ALA).

So please, continue to spread the word about why we need to look at how =
to
best #FreeTheStandards. My thinking is that a Creative Commons =
Attribution,
Non-Commercial, Share-Alike license (CC: BY-NC-SA) would provide a =
trusted
and tested license that has stood up against commercial usage while
protecting our rights for other educational use in schools and =
districts. At
the same time, remember all the great things that AASL and ALA have done =
for
us; if you haven't checked out the new Standards in Action book, for
example, I highly recommend it! That is how AASL can continue to profit
while providing free use of the standards!

Again, thank you for your support. I am humbled by how far the cry to
#FreeTheStandards has spread in such a short time.
