I just got 2 new phone lines with the possibility of voice mail (welcome to the 20th century - eh?) and my plan is to have all sales calls forwarded to the voice mail - then delete them without listening. Ther vendors (mostly cold calls anyway) will never know -- sorry if this hurts anyone's feelings among the venodr community, but honestly, they don't pay me to talk with YOU - they pay me to teach! There are only about 5 vendors that I will talk to and they all start the conversation with - "is this a good time to talk, Joanne?" and take no for an answer because most have been in my shoes. IMHO of course - vendors do more harm than good with cold calls. I tell him at the beginning of the call that I don't mind talking to him, but the library has no budget and cannot purchase anything until the next school year. It happens to be the truth in my case most of the time, but they waste no time telling me "thank you and goodbye". Yes, I get interuppted when I have to answer the phone. But,the minute I realize it is a vendor, I say, "No thank you" and hang up. It is NOT rude to do that. Even Ann Landers used to say that we have phones in our homes (libraries) for OUR convenience, and the vendors are the intrusion. I had an interesting experience with a vendor many years ago. In those days I didn't have a phone in my library. The secretary had to call me over the intercom, I had to go down stairs, and then take the call. I said no and hung up. He called my principal to tell me that I was rude!!! For all people who are trying to make a living cold calling librarians, I apologize for my poor attitude, but that's just the way I am. I also have a suggestion. Don't ask me if I'm busy, or have a minute. That gives me a perfect opportunity to say "yes, I'm busy", or "no, I don't have a minute", and hang up.
