Advance reader's copies are just that. Books that are provided by the
publisher for reviewers. Many of us who write for the old fashioned
media have a long lead time. We need to read and write a few months
ahead of the pub date. I am grateful to receive galleys and review
editions as it would be impossible for me read widely and that far ahead
without them.

Reviewers have no obligation to write a positive review. Our only
obligation is to read, think and write critically about a book. We are
not obliged to review every book we receive. (even at about a book a
day, that would be impossible)

The galleys that go to a bookstore are sent so that staff can read and
be able to hand sell titles that they are excited about. Again there is
no obligation on the part of the bookseller to think positively about
any book.

You may have noticed that I recently have commented about advance
reader copy books.

These books were given to me by my local book store, not by the
publishers. I do not accept free books from publishers or from
authors (several have offered them to me at conferences.) The reason
for this is that I want to be free to say what I want about the books.
I don’t want anyone to think that I might change my comments because
they gave a book.
