Yes, you can use your phone to check out books. There is an iPhone app called CardStar that can store your barcodes for things like library cards and store discount cards. Not all circ scanners can read the iPhone barcodes, but there are several that can. You can find out more about the app here: http://lifehacker.com/5278532/cardstar-creates-scanner+friendly-bonus-ca rds-on-iphones Michele Farley Children's Services Consultant Professional Development Office Indiana State Library (317) 234-5649 mfarley@library.in.gov Currently reading: The Ghost Map by Steven Johnson -----Original Message----- From: School Library Media & Network Communications [mailto:LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU] On Behalf Of Cheryl Youse Sent: Friday, July 31, 2009 9:15 AM To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: Re: TECH: Privacy/security question--along these lines I was talking with a store owner the other day who told me that he had recently discovered a new capability of cell phones. He had a customer pull out his cell phone and scan the bar code. The phone then gave the customer a price comparison of that item with the cost of it in other stores in the area. He then decided that price was acceptable and purchased it, though he told him that Kohl's had it for a dollar less but it wasn't worth the drive. I didn't know there was an application that did that. The owner also pointed out if he could scan the bar code, he could also scan the bar code on the receipt for credit card information. And then of course, there's the question, could cell phones be used to check out books?
