Oh David-
Although I know that these are worthwhile events, as a former state
school library association president, please don't dismiss state/local
gatherings-they truly are the grassroots and training network for our
national organizations and initiatives. I felt I became a much stronger
teacher librarian and professional advocate because of my involvement at
the local and state levels and these experiences were an invaluable
help to me when I attained National Board Certification. As someone who
now works in the private sector for a vendor, I believe companies such
as ours have much to offer the library community and they to us at these
events. Plus, though I hate to play the economics card, local and
state conferences are a great way for many to stay involved at a lower
cost.
