This has probably been happening for years - but it has taken me this
long to realize it.

I looked at the Teens top Ten 2009 nominations which gives teens an
opportunity to vote on their favorites. ALA is providing downloadable
bookmarks to promote the program. We will have a new 9th grade teacher
next year - so I thought we could start the kids out reading 2 or 3 of
the nominations and participate in the voting. Silly me. The voting
must me done by August 24.

I figured that I must be very late finding out about the process. Then
I looked at the date on the news release about the bookmarks. June 15.
Way too late to do ANYTHING with high school students. In New York
state, the last day of classes was June 12. Kids are in exams now. I
know that many states started summer break quite awhile ago. Yes, yes -
I know that public libraries will promote this. But I would have LOVED
a chance to promote this. I have access to ALL the kids. The public
library has a harder time reaching those kids who are not avid library
users.

How about getting the promotional materials out by the beginning of May
at the very least. Earlier if at all possible. Or - start the voting
process in the summer but have it open till October.
