I think this is a variation on the ABCD Goldfish...I do remember a
book that I had in my library eons ago (about right for your son's age).

It is all built on the premise that many words can sound like just
letters. These are just a few of what I found:

ABCD goldfish?
LMNO goldfish.
OSAR goldfish.

ABCD goldfish? Abby, see de goldfish?
LMNO goldfish. ..??.... am no goldfish (I can't quite work out the
'L'" sound here, unless it's French)
OSAR goldfish. Oh yes they are goldfish
You can continue
ICM goldfish I see (th)em goldfish
CDBDI's (See 'dem beedy eyes)

M R DUCKS
M R NOT
M R 2
C D E D B D FEET? (not sure of this translation!)
L I B
M R DUCKS

CM Ducks?
M8 Ducks.
OSAR Ducks. CM Wings?
LIB. MR Ducks.

MR Snakes
MR Not
OSAR Snakes
CM B D I's
LIB MR Snakes

1. M R Ducks
M R Knot
O S A R, C M Wangs?
L I B
M R Ducks

2. M R Mice
M R Knot
O S A R, C M E D B D Feet?
L I B
M R Mice

3. M R Snakes
M R Knot
O S A R, C M B D Eyes?
L I B
M R Snakes
