Most of us saw the national news stories last week about the invaluable service and
NEED that our public libraries fill during these tough economic times.  I've
heard sad funding stories out of Ohio for several years now.  We can only hope that
the public will rise up and demand a better deal for themselves.

I will always believe that public libraries are the very BEST investment in our
communities.  The return on the public investment is incalculable.

Ohio will be in my thoughts.

Subject: OT: Ohio Only Gov Strickland's budget

Late Friday, June 19, Gov. Strickland proposed his budget designed to address the
deficit.

The local print and television media have been disseminating info about only one,
single aspect of the proposed budget--the governor's turnaround on allowing slot
machines.

The media is not telling anyone is that to
close the gap by the end of this month, as required by law, many social
services will suffer. I do not know why the media is not doing its job of
disseminating information, but they aren't. The lead story in the Cleveland Plain
Dealer on Saturday was a self-serving piece of drivel about how financially solvent
the Plain Dealer is--as if they are the be-all and end-all of our universe.

One of the worst hit services based on the
currently proposed budget are Ohio's libraries, which will see half of
their state funding vanish from 2009 to 2010. The current budget calls
for around $460 million in state funds to be shared by Ohio's public
libraries. In each of the next two years, the proposed budget calls for
around $227 million for public libraries. Since about 175 of Ohio's
libraries rely solely on state funds, this is a looming disaster.
Libraries that have no local levy will begin closing as of July 1. Libraries that
are fortunate enough to have a local property tax levy will face major cutbacks in
staffing, programs, services, hours, and materials.
If you live in Ohio, to save Ohio's libraries, please do the following:
* Call the Governor's office at 614-466-3555
* Call your local state representative (http://tiny.cc/ErLsz)
* Call your state senator
(http://www.senate.state.oh.us/senators/SenateZipSearch.html)
Thank you most sincerely for your time and attention.
