Special thanks and "hugs" for all your sage advice!

I had a great interview, but the job went to someone who was already working
with that school.

Here's my original post:

I just got a call for an interview. It's at 2:00 on Monday. I'm just
beginning to put together a power point portfolio on CD.

What are the most important things I should include?

  I plan to include:

o Professional development I've taught to teachers: web page
development, Photo Story tutorials

o Developing a Disaster Manual

o Setting up and running a book fair

o Setting up and hosting a guest author visit

o Library organization (reorganizing book bins, leveled readers, etc.)

o Small group instruction with kids

o Technology instruction with kids

Should I include inventory or actually working the
computer...Athena.checking out books, etc.?

Also, are there any tips for a great interview? I've read the archives, but
would still love to hear from you wise ones! :-) I'm nervous and excited!

Here are the wonderful replies I received from my plea for help: (again,
THANK YOU!!!)

Try to add an advocacy plan. This will help with those whom are
interviewing you see your vision for a library. Also try to have some
evidence that you know how to collaborate with other teachers, and something
that shows you have foundations for library management

Several of my interviews focused on teaching w/technology, collaboration,
and programming. You can include reading programs, library programming, and
any special family events you did to promote book fair. You can probably
leave the disaster plan out unless asked. I wouldn't include Athena other
than to state that you use it; I assume that it's elementary; middle and h.s
interviews may focus more on teaching research skills and programs to
promote reading.

What have you done to promote reading? clubs? book talks?

Do you have a morning tv program? If so, what and how do you manage it?

Do you have a chance to do collaborative planning with your teachers and how
do you evaluate it.

**************

Be sure to talk about how you can serve teachers and students. Collaboration
toward academic acheivement for all types of stduents.

Discipline policy?

Challenged books viewpoint?

Open access or fixed schedule?

Also, are there any tips for a great interview?

Listen carefully to questions, take notes, jot down your own questions
beforehand. Dress professionally, conservatively.

Your portfolio is going to be way more in depth than mine was. All I had
was: My personal mission statement, my resume, reference list, and then I
included one great lesson plan from each grade level, which in my case was
K-5. I also printed off samples of children's work when applicable to show
them the final products of my lessons. I'm not sure the disaster plan is a
necessity for the portfolio, but you might want a slide that has a bulleted
list of things you can do and include disaster plan in the list. Also
include inventory in the list, but they won't want to look through all that.

My only other advice is to relax and sell yourself! If you don't know the
answer to something, don't BS them, just say I don't know, but I'm willing
to learn. I did that in my interview, and my new principal loved the fact
that I was honest and "real."

when I put my portfolio together, I put stuff about
PD I did
collaboration with teachers on lesson
book club I had
some booklists I created
pictures, pictures pictures of book club kids, bulletin boards, and my
library space -- I hadn't thought of that and a good friend said "aren't you
going to show them your space?" -- I had pictures of events, etc.

I'd leave out the disaster manual.
