book*** When Deet's father is jailed for using drugs, Deet learns that

he thought they were. (grades 6-9)

The Higher Power of Lucky by Susan Patron mentions a parent in jail. The
other books that I know of are more for young adults, written by Sharon
Draper. The content of those may not be appropriate for younger
audiences.

Sue Stauffacher's "Harry Sue", one of my favorite characters of all
time, and completely under-acknowledged. Her mother is in jail and this
child with a heart as great as any you'll find anywhere wants to go to
jail too, so she can see her mother. Of course she doesn't and in spite
of her stated aims, finds herself being a mensch over and over again.
(grades 5-8)
